How to Model a Nut

I was cruising around looking at some modeling blogs and came accross a modeling community based on a forum, but allows users to submit tutorials to their blog sections. There is a sale area where users can put up their work.

Anyways here is a post I was reading through and was a bit suprised that they actually threaded the inside as well. The approach is quite is more mathematical than I would have taken. I think the Twist Deformer in the Animation tab + Extudes would be best.

The quickest method is as follows:

  1. Polygons>Mesh>Separate the faces which make up the cylindrical middle, from rest of the nut.
  2. select the object and Animation>Create_Deformers>Nonlinear>Twist
  3. With the object twist1 selected, go to your Channel Box and change the inputs for the End Angle to 360(you can change this to whatever fits your thread size)
  4. Select now select every other vertical row of faces and Polygons>Edit Mesh>Extrude the faces out to make your threads! (as a side note you will want to Extrude several times and rescale to get the best look).

My process leaves alot of room up for error, but if you are more about the feel than the exact look it will do!

This was an attempt at complete instructions as opposed to a video tutorial to compare how readers react. That website I linked had some pricing issues. Their models & texture maps were alright but not worth the money. If your going to buy models online, buy them at TurbosSquid  While they do have price issues in places, more of their models are worth the money.
