Blueprint Database

No matter if your beginner, intermediate, or expert modeler, you need reference material to create your work. There are tons of databases online which have orthographic blueprints of objects. These objects range from naval ships to Volkswagen Beetles. The-Blueprints.com is probably the best database for one stop blueprints. This is a screenshot from their main website:

categories for the-blueprint.com

They have 44,000 blueprints. Users must register to get full access to the high resolution images, but its totally worth it. Registration is free. Those numbers by the categories are real, and continuously updated.  They also provide a tutorial section which explains step by step how to import the drawings into your work space and begin work.

If they don’t have everything you want Google image searches are always good. While looking around on Google, I found this forum who’s complete focus is blueprint creation and migration to 3D.  They have sections for work in progress in both 2d diagrams, as well as 3d adaptions. After searching through their site index, I found this secret part of their site for old never made diagrams.

Beginners! Please, follow their tutorial and begin modeling! It will help you develop your skills  by leaps and bounds! Also if your in this phase of skill development, you should check out some the Maya links on the right side of my site. There are some great concept art databases in there which will help with ideas for your own work. Never feel bad about drawing ideas from concept art, but don’t copy their content completely unless you send a copy to the maker of the concept art, and you credit them.
